Priced at $200 (appr. $1,700 today), this ‘expensive’ disc format was discontinued within a year of launch due to plummeting sales.

While today’s cars are equipped with infotainment systems like Bluetooth connectivity, CD players, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the Highway Hi-Fi was the world’s first in-car stereo system.
Unlike the AM/FM radio that had arrived in the early 1950s, the Highway Hi-Fi, which lets you choose your own music, first appeared in 1956.
The vinyl discs lets you enjoy 90 minutes of music without having to make a stop to change – which was twice what you could get from a normal vinyl record of the mid-1950s.
Unfortunately, people didn’t adopt this new ‘expensive’ disc format that is priced at $200 (or around $1,700 today) and within a year of launch, the Highway Hi-Fi was discontinued due to plummeting sales.
