Tottenham Hotspur will keep a close eye on 21-year-old Uruguay international Manuel Ugarte at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar given their interest in the player, as per Portuguese outlet A Bola (h/t the Express).
The defensive midfielder is one of manager Ruben Amorim’s most trusted players at the age of just 21. He has played in 19 matches for Sporting CP across competitions this season.
This includes his two impressive displays in Sporting’s UEFA Champions League group stage ties against Spurs earlier this season. He has a lot of years ahead of him and can take his game to the next level under a coach like Antonio Conte.
It’s not to say that Amorim isn’t a good manager, but at Spurs, he has a better chance of playing against the best players in world football on a more regular basis.
Moreover, he would be competing with the likes of equally world-class midfielders in Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Rodrigo Bentancur among others. The last defensive midfielder we signed from Sporting wasn’t a bad buy in any way.
Eric Dier has become one of our linchpins in defence after reinvigorating himself in that position in the past few seasons. Like Dier, Ugarte is also going to the FIFA World Cup.
Even regular displays for the Uruguay international could drive up his stocks and increase potential suitors. The Primeira Liga giants have been a hotbed of young European talent in the past couple of decades.
And Ugarte seems to be the new kid on the block. However, they won’t be in any urgent need to sell him as his current contract expires only in the summer of 2026 (Transfermarkt).
We have young Oliver Skipp in our ranks eager to make an impression, but those who have seen Ugarte play know that he is a class apart. Uruguay play against Portugal, South Korea, and Ghana in the group stages of the World Cup in Qatar.
