VRA Provides Relief to Flood Victims After Akosombo Dam Spillage

The Volta River Authority (VRA) has taken significant steps to provide relief to the numerous flood victims in nine affected districts due to the overflow of the Akosombo Dam. The VRA’s response to the severe flooding has included the donation of relief items valued at over one million Ghana Cedis.

The relief items comprise a range of essentials, including toiletries, bags of rice and sugar, plastic buckets with bowls, mattresses, canned foods, and drinking water. These items are aimed at aiding those affected by the flooding and offering them some respite during these challenging times.

Furthermore, the VRA is also actively engaged in delivering potable water to the affected residents. They are achieving this through both sachet water distribution and water tanker services, ensuring that those affected have access to clean drinking water.

Ing. Kenneth Arthur, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Services at the VRA, officially handed over the relief items to representatives from the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) and the Emergency Management Committee (EMC) at the North Tongu District Assembly on October 13, 2023. He expressed the VRA’s commitment to supporting flood victims across all nine affected districts and explained, “VRA has already collaborated with NADMO to provide relief items, and we intend to enhance our humanitarian efforts to deliver more relief items.”

He also elaborated on the contents of the relief packages, which included various food items and sanitary supplies, in addition to the provision of potable water through water tankers.

The Deputy Director General of NADMO, Seji Saji, expressed gratitude for the VRA’s timely intervention, highlighting the relief that these donations would bring to flood victims, especially those sheltered in safe havens. He stated, “We commend VRA for these timely donations” and emphasized the importance of providing some comfort to the affected individuals in the safe havens, where nurses are tending to their health needs.

Divine Fenu, the District Chief Executive for North Tongu, emphasized the assembly’s ongoing collaboration with the VRA to ensure that flood victims, especially the elderly and children, receive the best care at the safe havens. The assembly’s approach prioritizes the specific needs of the elderly and children in terms of food distribution.

The background to this relief effort is the release of excess water from the Akosombo Hydro Dam initiated by the Volta River Authority on September 15, 2023. The rising water levels in the dam led to flooding in nine downstream districts. While maintaining the integrity of the Akosombo Dam is of paramount importance, the VRA is dedicated to mitigating the impact of the flood on lives and properties.
