The Western Regional House of Chiefs has expressed admiration for Vice President Bawumia’s respectful demeanor towards traditional authorities. During his regional campaign tour, Dr. Bawumia prioritizes engaging with traditional leaders and other key stakeholders. In a recent meeting with the Western Regional House of Chiefs in Takoradi, he shared his vision for the country and attentively listened to their concerns, demonstrating a commitment to understanding and addressing regional issues.
The Acting President of the Western Regional House Chiefs, speaking on behalf of the House, commended Dr. Bawumia for his humility and respect towards traditional authority. He highlighted the overwhelming nature of Dr. Bawumia’s humility and respect, acknowledging these qualities as significant in fostering a positive relationship between the government and traditional leaders. The Acting President further stated that their presence to receive Dr. Bawumia was a reciprocation of the respect he has shown to traditional authorities.
In his address to the traditional rulers, Dr. Bawumia outlined his plans for the country if elected in the 2024 elections. One of his key proposals is to amend the Chieftaincy Act to restore some powers to traditional leaders, especially in matters of local judiciary. He believes that empowering traditional rulers in this way will not only enhance the prestige of the chieftaincy institution but also reduce the burden of local disputes on the formal judicial system.
Additionally, Dr. Bawumia pledged to establish a fund dedicated to the development of the chieftaincy institution. This fund would support initiatives aimed at preserving and promoting traditional values and practices. Dr. Bawumia’s proposals reflect his commitment to strengthening the partnership between the government and traditional authorities, highlighting the importance of traditional leadership in Ghana’s governance structure.
