British heavyweight champion Daniel Dubois has defeated Fabio Wardley for the second time in five months, delivering a devastating second-round technical knockout at London’s O2 Arena to retain his WBO world heavyweight championship.

Dubois vs Wardley 2 | The O2

British boxing star Daniel Dubois has successfully defended his World Boxing Organisation (WBO) heavyweight title after stopping compatriot Fabio Wardley in the second round of their highly anticipated rematch on Saturday, October 17, 2026.

The championship contest, staged at the O2 Arena in London, ended after just four minutes and 21 seconds of boxing, with Wardley’s corner throwing in the towel to prevent further punishment.

Referee Steve Gray officially stopped the contest at 2 minutes and 21 seconds of the second round, confirming Dubois as the winner by technical knockout.

The result marked Dubois’ second consecutive victory over Wardley, having previously defeated him in the 11th round of their first encounter in May.

This time, however, the contest was considerably shorter, with the champion imposing his authority almost immediately after the opening bell.

Dubois Drops Wardley Within 17 Seconds

Wardley entered the rematch hoping to reverse the result of their first meeting and reclaim the WBO heavyweight championship.

But his ambitions suffered a major setback almost immediately.

Just 17 seconds into the opening round, Dubois landed a powerful straight right hand that sent Wardley to the canvas.

The early knockdown established the direction of the fight, as Dubois pressed forward with combinations and heavy punches.

Wardley struggled to recover his rhythm and found himself under sustained pressure from an opponent who appeared determined not to repeat the lengthy contest of their previous meeting.

Although Wardley survived the opening round, the warning signs were evident.

Dubois continued his aggressive approach in the second round, cutting off Wardley’s opportunities to establish distance and repeatedly forcing him into defensive positions.

With Wardley absorbing further punishment, his trainer Ben Davison eventually threw in the towel.

The referee immediately waved off the contest, giving Dubois a decisive victory and another successful defence of his world title.

A Dramatic Contrast to Their First Fight

The rematch was billed as an opportunity for Wardley to redeem himself after a difficult defeat in May 2026.

Their first encounter in Manchester had been a fiercely contested heavyweight battle.

Wardley initially enjoyed considerable success, knocking Dubois down twice during the opening three rounds.

However, Dubois recovered from those setbacks and gradually took control, using his punching power and sustained pressure to wear down his opponent.

The fight continued until the 11th round, when Dubois secured the stoppage and captured the WBO heavyweight title.

Despite the defeat, Wardley believed he could produce a different result in a second meeting.

He exercised his contractual rematch clause, setting up another championship contest just five months later.

But the second fight offered little of the competitive balance seen in Manchester.

Dubois was quicker to establish control and denied Wardley the early success that had made their first encounter so dramatic.

Wardley Accepts Responsibility for Defeat

Following the contest, Wardley acknowledged that he had failed to execute his intended strategy.

Rather than blaming his corner or the relatively short interval between the two fights, he accepted responsibility for his performance.

The former champion also praised Dubois for his preparation and effectiveness.

Wardley indicated that he would review the defeat with his team and attempt to rebuild his career.

The loss leaves him with a professional record of 20 victories, two defeats and one draw, while Dubois improves to 24 wins and three losses.

For Wardley, the immediate challenge will be recovering from two damaging defeats against the same opponent and deciding how best to return to heavyweight contention.

Dubois Strengthens His Position in Heavyweight Boxing

The victory represents another important development in Dubois’ career.

The 29-year-old has experienced both major triumphs and setbacks at the highest level of professional boxing.

In September 2024, he defeated former two-time unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua at Wembley Stadium, recording a fifth-round knockout.

However, his subsequent defeat to Oleksandr Usyk in July 2025 cost him the IBF heavyweight championship.

Dubois responded by defeating Wardley in May 2026 to become WBO champion, and Saturday’s successful defence strengthens his position among the leading contenders in the division.

His latest performance also demonstrates the value of tactical adjustments between fights.

Having been knocked down twice in the first encounter, Dubois approached the rematch with greater urgency and controlled the contest from the opening exchanges.

Filip Hrgovic Challenges Dubois to Heavyweight Unification Fight

Attention quickly turned to Dubois’ next possible opponent after the fight.

Croatian heavyweight Filip Hrgović entered the ring and expressed interest in facing Dubois in a championship unification contest.

Hrgovic currently holds the IBF heavyweight title, making a potential meeting an opportunity for the two fighters to combine their championships.

The pair have previously met in June 2024, when Dubois defeated Hrgovic by technical knockout in Saudi Arabia.

A second encounter would therefore carry its own storyline, with Hrgovic seeking revenge and Dubois hoping to add another major world title to his collection.

Hrgovic proposed a possible meeting in March, although no official agreement has been announced.

Promoter Frank Warren also indicated that mandatory championship obligations would need to be considered before a unification fight could be finalised.

What Next for Fabio Wardley?

For Wardley, the defeat raises difficult questions about the next stage of his boxing career.

The British heavyweight had built his reputation through an unbeaten rise that included several dramatic victories and stoppages.

His willingness to face Dubois again demonstrated his determination to compete at the highest level.

However, consecutive defeats against the same opponent have interrupted his momentum.

Some boxing observers have questioned whether returning to the ring just five months after their punishing first contest was the right decision.

Wardley, nevertheless, has rejected suggestions that the interval between the fights was responsible for Saturday’s result.

He maintains that his performance and failure to implement the fight plan were the decisive factors.

Any decision about his next contest will depend on his recovery, his team’s assessment and his future ambitions.

A Statement Victory in London’s Heavyweight Showdown

Saturday’s result leaves little doubt about the outcome of the rivalry between Dubois and Wardley.

Their first encounter demonstrated Dubois’ resilience after suffering early knockdowns. Their second highlighted his ability to impose his power and finish a contest quickly.

For Dubois, the focus now shifts towards bigger opportunities and the possibility of another heavyweight title unification.

For Wardley, the task is to regroup and rebuild after suffering the second defeat of his professional career.

The O2 Arena witnessed a contest that many expected to be another prolonged heavyweight battle, but Dubois needed less than two rounds to settle the argument.

With two victories from two meetings, Daniel Dubois has firmly established his superiority over Fabio Wardley and retained his place among boxing’s world heavyweight champions.
