In the aftermath of President Akufo-Addo’s optimistic Christmas address, prominent economic analyst Professor John Gatsi expressed skepticism about the proclaimed positive turn in Ghana’s economic outlook. Speaking on Joy FM’s Newsnight, he meticulously dissected the economic indicators mentioned by President Akufo-Addo, asserting that they did not align with the claimed positive trajectory.
President Akufo-Addo had emphasized controlled inflation, a stable exchange rate, and overall economic growth. However, Professor Gatsi countered, stressing the necessity for a comprehensive demonstration of improvement. He specifically highlighted the challenges faced by the manufacturing and industrial sectors, including issues like multiple taxation, a challenging operating environment, and limited, expensive access to credit.
According to Professor Gatsi, the reduction in inflation alone does not substantiate President Akufo-Addo’s claim of a significant economic turnaround. In response to the President’s Christmas message, Prof Gatsi urged the government to address the challenges faced by crucial sectors and collaborate on cohesive actions to achieve genuine economic recovery.
The Dean of the School of Business at the University of Cape Coast, Prof John Gatsi, unequivocally disagreed with President Akufo-Addo’s assertion, stating, “Definitely, not so.” This response underscores the ongoing debate about the actual state of Ghana’s economy despite the President’s optimistic Christmas message.
