Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has frequently expressed his desire to shut down Al Jazeera’s operations in Israel, citing various security concerns. This has coincided with incidents where Israeli military actions have resulted in the deaths of Al Jazeera journalists in Palestine.
On Monday, Israel’s parliament passed a new law allowing the temporary shutdown of foreign media outlets in Israel, with Al Jazeera being a primary target. This law authorizes the closure of foreign media bureaus for up to 45 days, with the possibility of extension. The law remains in effect until the end of July or until significant military operations in Gaza conclude. Additionally, it permits the confiscation of equipment if deemed a security threat.
Netanyahu has reiterated his intention to shut down Al Jazeera, stating, “Al Jazeera harmed Israel’s security, actively participated in the October 7 massacre, and incited against Israeli soldiers.” He emphasized his commitment to using the new law to cease the channel’s operations in Israel.
